When a major fire destroyed part of an Oxford Street retail building, we were called in to assess the remaining structure. The fire was so serious that full demolition was the only option and over the coming months we engineered a 7 storey, steel framed building over a new basement. With 3 floors of retail below grade A offices, the building was re-constructed within 2 years to reinstate this part of Londons’ famous retail destination.
Engineering a building in central London is always complex. Engineering a building on London’s busiest shopping street is even more so. We faced an intricate set of challenges, including London Underground, Crossrail, protected views, ultra shallow floor zones and sensitive neighbourly negotiations.
