Background:

The Bedford Estates has refurbished several of its properties on this Bloomsbury street, to create shops with individual character reflecting the architecture of the 1920s.

Designs make use of existing timber and stone structures where possible, whilst installing new steel frames, windows, interior walls and ceilings to the shops and new apartments above. The work included renovating the pavement vaults.

According to Christian Garnett of Garnett+ Partners Architects, “The design was created to work with the original architecture and to install an up-to-date design based on shop fronts from the 1920s.” Pavements have been upgraded, mature trees retained and period lighting is being installed alongside the fascias and canopies.”
