Background:

A terrace conversion carried out by Andrew Budgen of Spacelab at his own home in Highgate was featured in The Times Magazine with the headline “The Super Side Return”. According to The Times, “The greatest puzzle of terraced houses is how to convert the side return. One architect has devised the ultimate solution.”

As structural engineers, MNP designed the steel support structure to enable an open-plan design. Andrew Budgen and Lorna Smith “...knocked out the back wall of the house, demolished the existing extension and built a new room that covers the whole width of the house.” The extension features a “hard-to-find” study, roof terrace and open-plan kitchen with a movable steel island.

Highgate House was also shortlisted for the Building Centre’s “Don’t Move, Improve” exhibition.
