Background:

Primark’s central distribution hub in Northamptonshire was increased in size by 140,000 sq ft to 800,000 sq ft, whilst remaining fully operational.  A large extension was wrapped around the existing building before breaking through, by removing structure immediately adjacent to fully loaded high-bay racking. This involved complex engineering by MNP in conjunction with steelwork contractors Atlas Ward (Severfield-Rowen Group).

The site was originally surrounded by a bund that required 10,000 lorry movements, with parking for 156 cars, 74 lorries and 61 trailers.  MNP’s civil engineering team designed widening of the highway, foundations, balancing ponds and major drainage infrastructure plus roads, parking, footpaths and a bellmouth which involved S278 negotiations.

The building, which formerly belonged to Ikea, was purchased by our clients the Moorfield Group in September 2011. Planning permission was granted for the extension in November 2011 and construction was completed in October 2012.
