Background:

A well known and much admired Bloomsbury petrol station was included in the commercial redevelopment on the corner of Store Street and Ridgemount Street that included façade retention, a new steel-framed office development and refurbishment of a listed dance hall.

MNP undertook a detailed site investigation of the petrol station site prior to construction. Buried fuel tanks had been decommissioned previously but there was evidence of hydrocarbon contamination around the tanks. Rather than potentially removing a large volume of sub soil, in situ soil treatment was proposed. The tanks were removed, and working with specialists Geotechnical & Environmental Associates (GEA), oxygen reducing compounds (ORCs) were dropped into an array of boreholes down to ground water level at a depth of 7m. Contamination levels were monitored throughout construction, until an agreed safe threshold had been reached.

"MNP's extensive experience in managing remediation has saved us time, cost and waste on site. Their strategic approach to testing, decontamination and liaison with the local authority has been a real benefit to the project."
Tony Tugwell, Garnett + Partners LLP.

Construction is now complete and the building is occupied by Byron Burgers restaurant.
